Slight modification of plans...

Hi All,

With GREAT deliberation and much disappointment, KroozinCanada has turned into "Kroozin the West Coast". Though the Charlottes were nearly picture-perfect, the whole trip was decided to be a little over-enthusiastic. Cat is on her way back to Montreal and I am so far enjoying the sun and very relaxed pace of the Island. Yesterday morning I caught the Queen of Prince Rupert down the Inside Passage which was stunning. We saw lots of whales and purpoises. I also met a older retired man from Germany, Peter, who has cycled every continent and is currently on a mission from Alaska to Pantagonia. We rode together this morning (after catching a few hours of sleep in a very noisy ferry terminal). Currently I am in Port McNeil, a charming portside community and am planning to just explore the rest of the route on my own, taking lots of detours along the way.

It has been tough to decide against a cross country trip, however, hopefully I can continue my dream of the open road and the freedom that brings in a different setting. So far I've come to appreciate my lack of a final destination and find it a lot more satisfying. Though cycling touring is definitely a skill I'd like to explore more and look forward to future two-wheeling.

Thanks for all those who supported me in this endeavour. I appreciate your respect of this decision. Though I won't be cycling across Canada, I definitely appreciate living in a country where plans of this sort are possible. Happy Canada folks! :)

Bonjour Cat!! :)

Bonjour tous le monde!

Today I met Cat (Catherine)!!! It was great to see her smiling face waiting at the ferry. She's got a great accent and I love all the french words that she brings to our conversations! We get along great and she doesn't seem TOO much faster than me, so hopefully we'll be a great pair! Tomorrow we will test out our legs on Graham Island up to Masset. Wide open roads ahead...

A la prochaine!

Queen Charlotte Islands

Hi everyone!

I'm emailing here from the Charlottes, a spot that's going to be hard to leave! I arrived on Saturday after catching the ferry from Prince Rupert. Waking up at 4:30am in the pouring rain to catch the ferry has been well worth it!

I'm staying with Moresby Explorers, a touring company which a friend I met at SFU works. They're located on Moresby Island, the Southern Island which reminds me a lot of Birchbay, where our family has a summer cottage. Despite the fact that my friend Hajar is down a float camp used for tour groups, the Moresby crew have been great. They have about 8 employees, which are usually out on 3 or 4 day tours, so the people around the office change pretty regularly.

Most people here are pretty up for any type of adventure. We spent Sunday exploring the Southern area of Graham Island (the main Northern Island) looking for a good surfing spot for a die-hard surfer named Cedar. Though the waves weren't as impressive as she was expecting, we found some great beaches, a cave and lots of intertidal spots to explore. The island have infinite spaces to explore, and the best thing is that you won't find a single soul (well, except for soaring eagles, tons of frolicking deer, noisy ravens and the occasional black bear). On the way back, we packed up the back of Cedar's truck with Cat Tails for her composter! I knew there was a use for those plants! On the way back, we missed the 20min ferry ride to Moresby, so we went back to one of the girls parents' place for dinner. They live on their own island and it's such a cute cozy spot! Pretty much everything is homemade, with a stove that uses recycled oil. It reminds me a lot of the sunshine coast.

The next day, I had the chance to go down on the power boat to meet Hajar at the float camp. I joined a group of older kayakers (a couple of which told me great stories of their bike trip across Canada last year!) that we're great company! It was great to hear reassurances, since I'm still feeling a little apprehensive. The islands are sure surreal and massive. I've never been anywhere so wild and beautiful. I was dropped off at the float camp (to gauge the scale- try to locate the float camp in the image next to Hajar kayaking!) where Hajar and I kayaked around and saw eagles, raccoons (it's funny to see them outside of the city!), and lots of jellies. That evening, a group from Washington state came in from a four day excusion in which they saw killer and humpback whales and tons of dolphins. Hajar served a treat for dinner with pie! Boy, I've been spoiled! The following morning, we went back to Moresby after stopping at Tanu, an old Haida settlement of about 500 people. It's the only one where you can see the layout of the village since the remains of each of the 24 houses are still intact. A pretty inspiring spot surrounding by a moss floor and temperate rainforest! On the way back, we say a black bear, they are pretty big around here!

I've spent the day exploring the Village of Queen Charlotte and Skidegate (a First Nations community- though not much was open since it's Aboriginal day). Lots of interesting sights and people. I've had a lot of people ask where I'm going or have been, so it's a quick conversation maker!

I'm really looking forward to meeting Cat at the ferry tomorrow. It will be great to have a travel partner!

Well, that's all the adventure to report for now! I'm working on getting pictures downloaded, so please stay tuned!

Many cheers! :)

The land of the Eagles

Thanks for the comments everyone!

With much help from family, I arrived safely in Prince Rupert yesterday morning. The airport is on a small island west of the main city and we caught a bus/ferry to get over. I had fun fitting together my bike and trailer (phew, everything arrived) and then went exploring around Rupert. It's quite a bit easier travelling with a bike out of a box, let me tell you!

Rupert is a beautiful spot with rich First Nations history. Everywhere you look, eagles are overhead. Yesterday I hang around the carving shed where I was inspired by local carvers (where I acted as a greeter to all the tourists from the huge cruise ship). I am in Tsimshian territory, but also met Gitksan and Nisga'a carvers. I was able to have a piece of red wood which with my single knife, hopefully I will have the chance to turn it into something special.

I'm catching the 6am ferry to the Queen Charlottes. This part of the world has been beatiful (the sights in addition to the people) so far and I'm glad to have the opportunity to explore Northern BC. The magnitude of this trip still intimidates the dickens out of me and more training would have always helped I'm sure, but hopefully Cat and I will encourage each other to tackle the grinds.

Naam-nin! (or something like that- it means see you later)

From the Pacific, eyeing the Atlantic

Home sweet home from Bamfield, a 6 week intensive (bold, underline) biology field school consisting of trampling over intertidal rocks in search of limpets (what?) and barnacles as well as learning multivariate stats. Oh, good times.

Preparation for the next adventure has begun, code name: KroozinCanada. For the next 3 to 4 months, I'll be pedal pushing coast to coast across our true, north, strong and free. With Cat Goulet from Montreal as my companion, we are leaving in the spirit of Mark Twain who said:

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do that by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines (or kick back the kick-stand). Sail away from safe harbour (ride). Catch the trade winds in your sails (go for it). Explore. Dream. Discover.

The purpose of this blog is to provide an update as to my whereabouts and what-abouts (oh, joy to uniqueness of undictionaried words). In case you're wondering, my parents nicknamed me Kroozy when I was wee since I'd always be on the move exploring, so aptly, here I am Kroozin again! Now, if I could only find my bike tools...

Enjoy! :)
